The core workflow of a ductile iron foundry starts with raw material selection and preparation,including pig iron,scrap steel,alloying elements and spheroidizing agents(such as magnesium,cerium and their alloys).These materials are precisely proportioned to ensure the chemical composition of molten iron meets design standards.Next,the materials are melted in electric furnaces or cupolas to form high-temperature molten iron,which then undergoes spheroidizing and inoculation treatment—key steps to convert graphite in the iron into spherical particles,enhancing the material’s ductility and toughness.
After treatment,the molten iron is poured into prefabricated molds(commonly sand molds,lost foam molds or investment molds)based on the casting’s shape and size.Once cooled and solidified,the castings are demolded,cleaned(to remove sand,burrs and excess material)and subjected to heat treatment(such as annealing or quenching)to optimize their mechanical properties.Strict quality control runs through the entire process,using equipment like spectrometers,hardness testers and coordinate measuring machines(CMM)to detect chemical composition,mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy.
