Nodular Iron Casting, also called ductile cast iron part or SG iron part,is a high-performance metal component made from nodular iron—a modified form of cast iron processed with spheroidizing agents.Unlike gray cast iron with flake graphite, nodular iron contains spherical graphite particles, which fundamentally improve the material’s mechanical properties, making it a preferred choice in various industrial applications.
The core advantage of nodular iron castings lies in their balanced performance:they combine the excellent castability and cost-effectiveness of cast iron with the high strength, ductility and toughness of steel.Typical mechanical properties include tensile strength ranging from 400MPa to 1200MPa,elongation of 2%to 20%,and good impact resistance, enabling them to withstand heavy loads, vibration and harsh working environments without easy fracture.
Nodular iron castings are classified by material grade, such as ASTM A536(QT400-18,QT500-7,etc.)and GB/T 1348(QT450-10,QT600-3,etc.),each tailored to different load-bearing and functional requirements.Common production processes include sand casting, lost foam casting and investment casting, allowing for the manufacturing of parts with complex shapes, varying sizes(from small components to large structural parts)and precise dimensional accuracy.
Widely applied in automotive, machinery, energy, infrastructure and agriculture industries, nodular iron castings serve as critical components such as engine crankshafts, gearboxes, pipe fittings, wind turbine hubs, tractor parts and valve bodies.Their reliability, durability and cost-effectiveness make them an indispensable part of modern engineering and manufacturing systems.
